Rabbit Island open tanks
Project Spotlight: Innovative Roofing Solution for Open Tanks at Rabbit Island
In November 2023, fabrication began on a unique and practical infrastructure upgrade at Rabbit Island, with on-site installation kicking off in January 2024. By the end of February, the project was fully completed—on time and on budget.
The task? Designing and installing custom roof structures for four large open tanks. These tanks, located at a sensitive site, needed covers to help reduce odour impact on the surrounding area. But this wasn’t a standard roofing job. The solution needed to be lightweight, structurally sound, and compatible with the existing tank walls—all while allowing access for ongoing maintenance inside the tanks.
Meeting the Challenge: Kernohan’s Smart Design
Kernohan delivered a tailored solution that was both innovative and efficient. The team designed a centre post system with a top flange, supported by curved poles that connected to the existing tank walls. This framework provided the backbone for a flexible fabric cover that could support its own weight while staying securely attached to the structure.
To ensure operational access remained easy and safe, custom hatches were integrated into each roof. These hatches were cut directly into the fabric and reinforced with steel frames, allowing workers to safely enter and maintain the tanks when needed.
Teamwork and Precision Delivery
A dedicated team of four carried out the installation over a two-month period, navigating tight timelines and unique design specifications. Thanks to careful planning and seamless execution, the project was wrapped up without delays or budget overruns.
This successful installation at Rabbit Island is a great example of how custom engineering and collaborative project delivery can meet complex infrastructure needs—while keeping environmental impact and operational practicality front of mind.
