Project Spotlight: Mechanical Fit-Out for Maitai Dam Aeration System

In May 2024, design began on an exciting new project at Maitai Dam, focused on enhancing the dam’s aeration capabilities. By August, fabrication was underway, and just four months later—in December 2024—the project was successfully completed.

Partnering for Precision

Kernohan Engineering was engaged by Industrial Marine Electrical to deliver the mechanical fit-out of the new aeration compressor building at the dam site. This specialised work formed a key part of a broader infrastructure upgrade designed to support environmental performance and long-term asset resilience.

Complex Installations in a Challenging Environment

The project scope included the installation of compressor and dryer combinations, along with a complete aluminium pipework system to connect the compressors, route air through the dryers, and deliver it to an underground PE pipe network awaiting connection.

But that was only the beginning.

Kernohan also installed stainless steel pipework running up the face of the dam wall—a challenging feat given the steep terrain and remote access. At the top, a custom manifold system was built to split the airflow into two dedicated lines:

  • A sparge line to inject air into the dam water for improved oxygen levels

  • A buoyancy line designed to support operational needs within the water column

Delivering Results with Confidence

This project demanded a high level of mechanical precision, thoughtful planning, and seamless coordination with electrical and civil works on-site. Kernohan’s team delivered across the board, ensuring that all components were installed to spec, on schedule, and ready to operate within the tight end-of-year deadline.

This successful mechanical fit-out at Maitai Dam reflects Kernohan’s reputation for high-quality delivery in technically demanding environments—helping partners like Industrial Marine Electrical bring complex water infrastructure projects to life.
