Daiken maintenance shutdown
Project Spotlight: Daiken Southland MDF Plant – Major Maintenance Shutdown
In early 2025, Kernohan Engineering successfully delivered a high-risk, high-impact maintenance shutdown at Daiken Southland’s MDF press plant—a project that showcased precision execution, safety-first coordination, and a collaborative approach to industrial problem-solving.
The Challenge: Time-Critical Maintenance in a High-Risk Environment
This critical shutdown focused on the replacement of the plant’s main heating platen and stainless-steel press belt—two essential components at the heart of the medium-density fibreboard (MDF) production process. The task demanded exceptional care and technical accuracy, as even the slightest misalignment or delay could result in costly downtime and long-term production issues.
With a tight five-week window and a worksite involving extreme temperatures, heavy machinery, and confined spaces, the project posed significant logistical and safety challenges.
The Kernohan Solution: Round-the-Clock, Precision-Focused Delivery
To meet the deadline, a 30-person team of welders, fitters, riggers, and supervisors was mobilised to operate on 24/7 rotating shifts. Careful planning allowed for seamless coordination between day and night crews, minimising delays and maximising momentum.
Key to success:
Safe removal and installation of large-scale press components
Precision alignment of the new platen and belt to ensure smooth, uninterrupted operation
Staged execution, enabling structured progress and clear handovers between teams
Clear communication and daily check-ins with the Daiken team to manage risks and adapt to evolving onsite conditions
The Result: Ahead of Schedule, Zero Incidents, High Satisfaction
Although the shutdown was planned for five weeks, the Kernohan team completed the work a full week ahead of schedule, returning the plant to operation with zero safety incidents and a result that exceeded client expectations.
This project highlights Kernohan’s capability in delivering complex industrial shutdowns, combining technical expertise with a sharp focus on planning, safety, and execution under pressure.
