Project Spotlight: 105ft Cruiser Refit for Passenger Transport
Kernohan Engineering recently completed a comprehensive refit and repurpose of a 105-foot Mikata-class cruiser, transforming the vessel into a safe, functional, and fully compliant passenger transport vessel. This project demanded precision engineering, marine expertise, and close coordination to meet a wide range of safety, structural, and operational requirements.
The Challenge: Reconfiguring for a New Purpose
Originally designed for a different function, the vessel required significant modifications to meet passenger-carrying standards. The scope of work included:
- Reconfiguring interior and exterior spaces to house more passengers, fire suppression systems, and safety gear
- Installing new navionics and communications systems
- Fitting water-tight doors and hatches throughout the vessel
- Servicing all water, air, and overboard valves
- Fabricating and installing new stairs, crane mounts, and encapsulated stairwell fire protection
- Adding deck rails, a lifeboat stow, and a fire gear locker
- Installing a fireproof galley door, along with drainage and refrigeration upgrades
- Re-naming the vessel and carrying out hull and propeller modifications
The Kernohan Approach: Precision, Compliance, and Quality
Working closely with the client and in line with Maritime Safety Authority (MSA) guidelines, the Kernohan team took a solutions-focused approach from day one. Each modification was designed and executed with safety, durability, and functionality in mind.
Using our CNC laser cutter, we were able to rapidly produce custom components with high precision, accelerating the fabrication process without compromising on quality.
From valve servicing to structural fabrication, all work was completed on time and to a high standard, with compliance at the core of every decision.
Ready for the Water
This major refit project successfully transformed a specialised vessel into a passenger-ready cruiser—equipped with modern systems, improved safety features, and a full suite of functional upgrades. It's another strong example of how Kernohan delivers complex marine engineering projects with skill, efficiency, and a sharp eye for detail.
