Project Spotlight: ‘Stainless Feather’ Sculpture for Auckland Regional Parks

In a unique collaboration blending artistry and engineering, Kernohan was proud to work with renowned Nelson artist Nic Moon on a striking sculptural commission to mark the 50th anniversary of Auckland’s Regional Parks.

The Vision: A Feather That Shelters

Inspired by the delicate form of the Kererū feather—from New Zealand’s native wood pigeon—the sculpture was envisioned as both an architectural shelter and a symbolic artwork. The feather, representing guardianship and connection to the natural world, was designed to nestle into the landscape of Wenderholm Regional Park, north of Auckland.

The Build: Precision Fabrication Meets Creative Design

Working closely with Nic Moon, the Kernohan team brought her vision to life through expert fabrication techniquesand a deep respect for the artistic intent. The result:

  • A 9-metre-long, 3.5-metre-wide sculptural structure

  • Fabricated from marine-grade, laser-cut stainless steel

  • Weighing approximately 2 tonnes, yet appearing light and delicate in form

Our role focused on turning a highly conceptual design into a durable, structurally sound shelter, capable of withstanding the coastal environment while maintaining the integrity of its aesthetic purpose.

Art Meets Engineering

Installed and opened in summer 2016, the ‘Stainless Feather’ stands as a testament to creative collaboration, combining craftsmanship with engineering precision. It now offers both shelter and a moment of reflection for visitors to Wenderholm, beautifully celebrating the natural heritage of Aotearoa.

Kernohan is proud to support New Zealand artists and public art initiatives, bringing together form, function, and fabrication to help powerful ideas take shape in the landscape.

With thanks to Nic Moon and White Space for permission and imagery.
