Project Spotlight: Major Refit of FPSO MV Raroa at Port Nelson

Kernohan Engineering proudly served as lead contractor for the FPSO MV Raroa—a vessel of unprecedented scale to dock at Port Nelson. At 252 metres long and 42 metres wide, the Raroa project represented a significant undertaking for both Kernohan and the Nelson region, marking a milestone in local marine and offshore support capability.

The Challenge: Complex Offshore Systems, Tight Timeline

The scope of work centred on upgrades to the vessel’s wellhead platform and processing equipment, including the installation of a new swivel system to allow the vessel to rotate on its mooring. With tight scheduling and strict safety protocols in place, Kernohan led a multi-disciplinary team working around the clock to deliver the project in just eight weeks.

Our Approach: 24/7 Project Delivery at Scale

To manage a project of this complexity, Kernohan established a full-time management and project coordination team, overseeing more than 150 specialised tradespeople across day and night shifts.

Key operational elements included:

  • 24/7 staffing and supervision, including 8 dedicated HSE personnel to implement OMV-specific risk management protocols

  • Coordination of all shore-based logistics, including transport, catering, laundry, provedoring, and merchandising

  • Setup of dedicated work areas for engineering activities, storage, and freight handling

  • Careful management of hazardous substances, along with the removal of sludge and general waste

The Result: A Seamless, Safe, and Successful Delivery

Thanks to meticulous planning and the commitment of every team member on site, the FPSO MV Raroa project was delivered ahead of schedule, without incident, and with no environmental impact.

This project showcased Kernohan’s ability to lead large-scale, high-risk marine engineering projects with a sharp focus on safety, efficiency, and execution—solidifying our role as a trusted partner for complex offshore infrastructure.
